About Me
After arriving in Poland in November 2009, my time had come to compete on stage for the first time in my wheelchair. Nervous, but excited, I performed my compulsory poses & routine. Everything went really well. I had only gone to Poland as an outsider - a novice competitor with a lot to learn - but here I was, representing the UK. To my delight, the judges scored me as straight firsts, meaning I was now World Champion in my field.
Following this success, I became an IFBB Pro Bodybuilder in 2010. Whilst waiting for a suitable Pro show date to be announced, I performed in Guest Spots in the UK. My story had some publicity and seemed to inspire other wheelchair bodybuilders to compete too. In October 2010, the UKBFF held a wheelchair category at the British Championships - a first for the UK - which is now an ongoing category, allowing disabled athletes the same competitive opportunities as everyone else. Result!
2011 saw the first ever IFBB Pro Wheelchair Show. It was held in Houston, Texas, USA - and I was ready to compete! The organisers were proud to be the hosting the first competitive show in the world where disabled athletes competed alongside able bodied athletes. This was history in the making as this was the first IFBB Pro Wheelchair Championships!
As one of 8 Professional Wheelchair Bodybuilders, I was so aware of how important this event was. We had worked tirelessly to earn this opportunity to compete. After years of trying, we were being recognised. Groundbreaking stuff!
We had all clearly trained and dieted hard, as the competition was tough! I had hoped to win (of course) but after meeting up with the others, this suddenly seemed secondary to the real achievement of us all just being there. It was an amazing experience to meet such like minded people, from all corners of the world.
I felt confident on stage and my routine went well. The judges placed me third, which I was thrilled with. Roll on 2012 for more Pro Shows, when I aim to climb the ladder to second or even first place!
